UACCM 'Learn, Preview, Nursing' Day a Success

Image
Participants experienced the delivery of a simulated child. UACCM hosted a special "Learn, Preview, Nursing" day on July 25 to showcase the offerings of its licensed practical nursing program. Due to the high-demand of the program and with the fall semester quickly approaching, UACCM hosted the free event for anyone in the area who may be interested in the LPN program.  The day started with a presentation explaining what to expect as a nursing student featuring nursing department faculty and admissions staff.  Attendees were given a tour of the UACCM campus, an overview of the free services available to students, and assistance in completing financial aid forms. The three-hour preview also included a special session in working with high-fidelity mannequins from the nursing department's simulation lab.  This session featured the simulated birth of a child with hands-on opportunities for participants to examine the mannequins and work w...

UACCM SPRING 2013 GRADUATES

Image
The University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton announces its spring 2013 graduates. Commencement ceremonies were held Saturday, May 11, at the H.B. White Auditorium of Morrilton High School. UACCM outgrew its facilities to host graduation on its campus some years ago, and the South Conway County School District School Board allows the College to hold its commencement ceremonies in the auditorium at the high school. Even still, the faculty, staff, administration, family, and friends who gather to show their support to graduates exceed the capacity of the auditorium. For this reason, UACCM held two ceremonies, the first at 10:00 a.m. and the second at 1:00 p.m. Former United States Senator and University of Arkansas System Board of Trustees member David Pryor attended the 10:00 a.m. ceremony and congratulated graduates with words of encouragement. Also present at that ceremony was Dr. Leroy Cox of the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith who awarded UACCM University B...

UACCM Theatre Dept. presents Kindertransport

Image
After the violence of Kristallnacht ("Night of the Broken Glass") against Jews across Germany and Austria, the British government authorized the massive transport of Jewish children (kinder) to Britain, via ship and train, to rescue them from the injustice and atrocities inflicted by Hitler and the Nazis.  Over the course of nine months between 1938 and 1939, 10,000 Jewish kinder were brought to safety- separating them from their parents and sparing them the horrors of the death camps where many of their family members were exterminated.  The play examines the life of one child over a 40-year period and is based on interviews with many kinder.  Don't miss this incredibly powerful drama.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH GUEST SPEAKERS RESCHEDULED

Due to inclement weather, the University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton has postponed its speakers for Black History Month, Elizabeth Eckford and Dr. Sybil Jordan Hampton. The pair has been rescheduled to speak at a free event on Feb. 28 at 6:00 p.m. at the UACCM Fine Arts Auditorium. In the early 1950s, Arkansas was one of 13 states with segregated schools, preventing black and white children from attending the same school. The start of integration in the South began when the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) appealed to the United States Supreme Court in 1952 on the grounds that school segregation was unconstitutional. The Supreme Court denied this appeal claiming that segregation was constitutional as long as schools were “separate but equal.” For two years, the NAACP provided the court with information to prove that the schools were not equal, and in 1954, the court ruled in their favor. Some of the 13 states began desegregation, b...

UACCM STUDENTS ARE CAREER-READY

Image
University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton students found that interviewers can be meticulous and quite clever when it comes to selecting a new employee. Representatives from several organizations in Central Arkansas participated in a panel discussion at UACCM’s “Step Up to Employment” event Wednesday, Nov. 7. Jody Gatchell, owner of A & J Collision Repair in Conway, admitted to scheduling interviews at 7:30 a.m. as a test to see if prospective employees would show up to work on time. Southwestern Energy representative Neil Morton said he looks for an interviewee’s nonverbal gestures rather than focusing only on what they say. Several members of the panel offered advice on resume-writing as well. Jasmine Wilson of Hewlett Packard said, “Match your resume to the skills needed for the job you applied for; don’t leave it overly generalized.” Other panel members, including representatives from Acxiom, Department of Human Services, and Crafton Tull, provided insigh...
