NTHS contributes annual donation to local non-profits

Image
The National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) at UACCM contributed their annual donation to local non-profits in the Morrilton area. Each year, student members choose causes to support and this year’s beneficiaries were Abundant Life Pregnancy Resource Center and Conway County Literacy Council.  According to their website, “The National Technical Honor Society is an educational non-profit that exists to honor, recognize, and empower students and teachers in Career & Technical Education.” The UACCM chapter is comprised of students in eligible technical programs.  Kimberly Hulit, NTHS President and business student, presents Melinda Chisum of Abundant Life Pregnancy Resource Center with a donation from the UACCM chapter. Along with their annual donations to local non-profits, NTHS members also pilot the recycling program on campus. Members of NTHS have the opportunity to apply for exclusive scholarships, are recognized with specific regalia at graduation, and are designated as NTHS mem

Industry Partner: Gary Massey

Image
This month’s featured industry partner is Gary Massey, human resources and safety personnel at Koontz Electric in Morrilton! Gary serves on our welding advisory committee. Gary says that one of the biggest benefits of partnering with UACCM is the quality job candidates they have received from the college. He says he has even learned some new welding verbiage from the welding instructors! When asked why others should serve on advisory committees, Gary says that it gives back to the community and is a chance to be involved. While he’s not an alum himself, Gary’s son, Cory, attended UACCM. Gary would recommend his career field to students because he says it is a rewarding field with excellent pay and benefits. Does Gary have any advice he would give to himself as he started his career? He advises students to continue gaining knowledge in their area.

Featured Alumni: Ryan Huffman

Ryan Huffman, business accounting graduate (’11), is another outstanding example of an alumna that chose to stay at UACCM. Ryan now serves as the administrative analyst for technical studies and helps to make our technical programs run as smoothly as possible. Let’s get to know her! What was your favorite thing about attending UACCM? The people were amazing, the instructors were helpful, and the class sizes are smaller than at 4-year universities. How did your experience at UACCM prepare you for your career and life today? Everything I learned at UACCM has helped me in my career. I wouldn't have the skills and knowledge I have now without the education I received. Why should students choose UACCM? Education is important in the competitive world we live in. UACCM can give you the foundation you need to be successful in life at a low cost while in a comfortable environment. You won't regret it! Looking back, what advice would you give yourself as a student? Don't be so nervou

Nursing and Science Receive Grant-Funded Upgrades

Image
The nursing and science programs at UACCM recently received much-needed upgrades thanks to grant funding, especially Covid-19 relief funds. As Covid-19 slows and operations steadily return to normal, these additions will assist students in becoming better nurses and science professionals for years to come. In the science department, existing microscopes have been outfitted with an HD screen and camera that help students see the bigger picture. By scanning a QR code with their smart device, they can easily capture photos of specimens for use in lab reports and study guides. Science instructor Anthony Holt also noted the importance of this new equipment for online learning. As an instructor, he can project the microscope images and record them. If virtual learning is ever implemented in the future, this ensures students still experience the important microscopy component of courses like microbiology. The purchase of this microscope equipment was made possible by the Higher Education E

This month, get to know Thomas Brodsky, second-year general education student from Conway, Arkansas.  Why did you choose UACCM? The great teachers and quality education. What are your favorite things to do or hobbies you enjoy when you're not at school? Outside of school, I enjoy being a licensed amateur radio operator and connecting with others over the radio waves. I also enjoy tinkering on vehicles and playing baseball. What is unique about your UACCM story? My first semester in college at UACCM was my first experience in a traditional classroom setting. Everyone at UACCM has contributed to my success as a college student and facilitated my transition. Do you have any special tips or tricks UACCM students should know? Put in the work and be proactive rather than reactive in your classes. What are your plans after you finish your degree? To transfer to a four-year Arkansas college to study so

Creating Safe Spaces: UACCM Student Proposes Therapy Garden at RVCAC

Image
For UACCM student Abigail Bailey, a love of research and a psychology background helped her create a project that will impact children in the River Valley for years to come. “I created a therapy garden in my first-semester general psychology class,” Abigail said. “I researched topics like how color and scent can affect someone's mood. I also created the layout for the garden—including a fountain, different species of flowers, bird feeders, benches, and a walkway.” This project will benefit River Valley Child Advocacy Center in Russellville.  According to their executive director, Marilyn Sanders, the River Valley Child Advocacy Center serves child sexual abuse victims with onsite advocacy, forensic interviews, sexual assault examinations, and trauma-focused therapy. Abigail hopes that her therapy garden will impact people who visit the Center and help them through this difficult process. “I learned that there are more aspects to helping someone's mental health than we think,” s
