How to Have a Healthy Summer

Everybody can do these five things to stay healthy over the summer. Jake Melara/Unsplash The summer season has officially begun, and UACCM’s Wellness is Necessary (W.I.N.) committee wants to share some tips on how to take care of your body and mind during the summer! 1. Get your rest Routines may vary with summer events, but aim to get seven to nine hours of sleep a night. Keep your room cool and shades pulled to help make your sleep more comfortable. 2. Move your body Added heat (even if it’s dry heat!) can make exercise uncomfortable in the summer months. Try getting some exercise in the morning hours before the sun is at its peak. Or break up your day and go for shorter walk breaks throughout your day. 3. Connect with others Plan something fun with family or friends. How to Cope with Stress in College

The UACCM Counseling & Disability Services will hold stress management workshops during in April, designed to help students better deal with pressures affecting their lives. These 50-minute discussions will take place each day starting Monday, April 8 through Friday, April 12, at the Library Complex, Room 201.  “We understand that college and stress go hand in hand," said Abby Jones, the counselor and disability services coordinator. "We’re offering this stress management workshop to assist students in learning about their stress as well as how to cope effectively with stress in and outside of college.”   Prizes will be given out to eligible participants.  For more information, contact UACCM Counseling & Disability Services at (501) 977-2095. 

12 Tips on How to Eat Better

March is National Nutrition Month, and UACCM's Wellness Is Necessary Committee (W.I.N.) is offering tips on how to eat more healthy. If you feel like you or your family are not getting enough nutrition, there are several ways to get your diet under control. These tips are provided by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics . 1). Eat Breakfast Start your morning with a healthy breakfast that includes lean protein, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Try making a breakfast burrito with scrambled eggs, low-fat cheese, salsa and a whole wheat tortilla or a parfait with low-fat plain yogurt, fruit and whole grain cereal. 2). Make Half Your Plate Fruits and Vegetables Fruits and veggies add color, flavor and texture plus vitamins, minerals and fiber to your plate. Make 2 cups of fruit and 2 ½ cups of vegetables your daily goal. Experiment with different types, including fresh, frozen and canned. 3). UACCM's Wellness Is Necessary Committee (W.I.N.)   February is almost over but we have a little bit more to share for Heart Health Month! Here are simple things that you can do daily to keep your heart healthy. Not All Fats Are Equal Some fats are necessary in our daily diet such as saturated, polyunsaturated and unsaturated fats. These are healthy fats, but consuming trans fats increases the risk of heart disease. It raises your bad cholesterol levels (LDL), lowers good cholesterol levels (HDL), and harms blood flow. Look for food with no trans fats.  Brush and Floss Dental health is often an indicator of the state of your heart heath. Gum disease can move into your bloodstream and can raise the risk of stroke and heart disease. Brush and floss to keep up with your dental hygiene. Get Enough Sleep Too little sleep raises the risk of cardiovascular disease, as some researchers believe that someone lacking enough sleep may be twice as likely to have a ...
