Registration, Pigging Out and More

Good morning, UACCM. For all you summer-schoolers, we hope your final exams are going well. If you need to register for summer II term classes, tomorrow is the regular registration date. Summer classes are a great way to make progress toward your degree at UACCM or at another college, so head to the university Center tomorrow between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm to sign up! The Great Arkansas Pig Out starts tomorrow and will feature tons of delicious food, fun and entertainment for the whole family. Lots of children's activities are being offered for free, as is entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights by some great performers. Check out www.pigout.info for a full schedule of events. Want to volunteer to help? A few volunteers are still needed, so call Kristi Strain at (501) 977-2085 and let her know you'd like to help. ood morning, UACCM! Here are a few things coming up later this week that you need to know about: This Thursday, June 24 marks final exams for summer I term classes ...good luck! The University Bookstore also closes for annual inventory this Thursday and will re-open July 1. This Friday, June 25 is regular registration for summer II term classes . Stop by the University Center from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm to sign up. This Friday and Saturday, June 25 and 26 is the 22nd Annual Great Arkansas Pig Out Festival in Morrilton! Beginning at 5:00 pm Friday, all are welcome to come down to the Morrilton City Park to take in the free kid's activities, delicious food in Pig Out Alley and dozens of sporting events for all ages. Free entertainment during GAPO will include rising star Wade Bowen and many more. Click here to see a full schedule of events . Students/Faculty Explore London & Japan - More to Come!

Four UACCM Instructors recently led groups of students and community members to explore London and Japan on two EF Educational Tours. Instructors Gretchen Schol and Tina Lake led the group to London during spring break 2010, where travelers experienced Windsor Castle, Big Ben, the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey and the British Museum with stops at the ancient site of Stonehenge, the Roman ruins at Bath, the famed Canterbury Cathedral and much more. A group of students, faculty members, alumni and community members also discovered the mystery of Japan on an EF Educational Tour during the May 2010 intersession. Lyndsey Daniel and Karen Caig joined travelers during two sightseeing tours in Tokyo and Kyoto, visits to the Meiji Shinto Shrine, Asakusa Kannon Temple, Nijo Castle, Heian Shrine and Garden, Gold Pavilion, Osaka Castle, a Sumida River cruise and more. Deadlines, CPR Training and More

Attention UACCM students: Tomorrow, Friday June 18 is the priority financial aid deadline for the summer II term. If you plan to enroll in courses during the summer II term, you must have your financial aid paperwork completed by tomorrow. For more information, call (501) 977-2055 or drop by the Financial Aid Office in the University Center. The American Red Cross is here today accepting blood donors until 4:00 p.m. Anyone interested in donating can drop in the Bloodmobile located in front of the Library Complex (no appointment necessary). Congratulations are in order for UACCM Math Instructor Cailin Mistrille! She was recently accepted as one of 24 Project ACCCESS Fellows by the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges. Project ACCCESS (Advancing Community College Careers, Education, Scholarship and Service) is a mentoring and professional development initiative for two-year college mathematics faculty. The project’s goal is to provide experiences that will help new faculty become more effective teachers and active members of the broader mathematical community. Congrats! Hundreds Attend Retirement Reception/Grand Opening

UACCM recently held a retirement reception for Chancellor Nathan Crook at the Leadership Development Institute (LDI) in downtown Morrilton. The event also served as the facility’s official grand opening, with an estimated 300 guests dropping in to wish Chancellor Crook farewell and to tour the renovated building. Chancellor Crook will step down on June 30, 2010, ending a 25-year stretch of leadership at the college. During the retirement reception, Conway County Judge Jimmy Hart and Morrilton Mayor Bobby Kirby presented Crook with a plaque proclaiming June 3 Nathan Crook Day in Morrilton. University of Arkansas System President Dr. B. Alan Sugg also presented Crook with a plaque naming him UACCM Chancellor Emeritus upon his retirement, and the UACCM Board of Visitors announced the re-naming of the University Center on campus to the C. Kid's College 2010 Registration Now Open

Attention area kids and parents! Registration for the 2010 Kid’s College at UACCM is now open. This year, Kid’s College will teach area first through third graders how to say “G’day mate” and “Yee-haw!” by exploring the culture, sights and sounds of the faraway land of Australia and the Great Barrie Reef as well as the rough-and-rowdy Wild West. The fun-filled week is scheduled for July 12 through 16, 2010. During Kid’s College, students will attend class each day from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Business Technology Center on campus at UACCM. Throughout this time, they will learn all about aquatic life surrounding the Great Barrier Reef as well as the people of Australia before discovering life in the American West between the years of 1850 and 1920. Kid’s College will also feature many hands-on activities, games, scientific investigations and art projects designed to enhance math and science skills among the children. The fee for Kid’s College 2010 will be $50 per student.

"Links for Learning" Raises $18,000 for UACCM

The University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton (UACCM) Foundation held its fifth annual “Links for Learning” Golf Tournament fundraiser on Thursday, May 20, 2010 at the Morrilton Country Club. A field of more than 100 golfers battled early morning downpours of rain before finishing out the three-person scramble under sunny skies. The tournament was the most successful to date, raising approximately $18,000 in net proceeds for UACCM. Southwestern Energy Company served as the tournament’s $3500 Platinum Sponsor. Energy Weldfab, Inc. was a $2000 Gold Sponsor, with Nesco Land/Field Services pledging $1,000 to the Foundation and serving as a Tournament Sponsor. The event had eleven $500 Team Sponsors: Benchmark Title, Champion Technologies , Crafton Tull Sparks Engineering , Daylight Donuts , DeSoto Drilling, Edward Jones Investments , KVOM , Regions Bank , Southern Pipeline Construction Co., Inc., St. Anthony’s Medical Center and Virco, Inc . Great Arkansas Pig Out to Benefit School Counts!

The Great Arkansas Pig Out (GAPO) Festival Board and the Morrilton Area Chamber of Commerce have supported a successful community and regional festival for 20 years. To celebrate the continuing success of the festival, the GAPO Board recently announced their ongoing commitment to the Conway County School Counts! initiative by naming the initiative as beneficiary of their endeavors with the festival for the second consecutive year. According to GAPO 2010 Chairperson Kristi Strain, “We continue to support the promotion of higher education to students in Conway County. By partnering with School Counts! again this year, we hope to further emphasize the value of education and a highly qualified workforce to area parents, students, residents, and businesses.” The Initiative was begun in 2006 to enhance Conway County’s economic development activities by promoting continued education and training for the graduates of the public and private high schools in Conway County.
