UAFS Student Earns Degree through UACCM Partnership

On Thursday, Wade James took a road trip from his home in Belleville to Fort Smith. He didn’t come to the city for Christmas shopping or sightseeing – instead, he came to receive his college degree from the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith.

James was conferred a Bachelor of Applied Science at the university’s commencement ceremony Dec. 10, made possible through an online completion program partnership between UAFS and the University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton, the school where James earned his associate degree.

The program allows students of 13 community colleges in Arkansas to transition into baccalaureate degree programs at UAFS. Most of the studies can be completed online.

James, a Danville High School graduate, graduated with his associate degree in computer information systems from UACCM in 2014. He said the applied science program made him want to continue his education at UAFS.

“The leadership and management aspects of the applied science degree were really interesting to me,” James said. “That was kind of the direction I was wanting to go after my associate degree. I wanted to get more into management in the information technology field, so I thought that would be a good fit.”

The convenience of the program was also a driving force in his decision.

“When I first started at UAFS, I was actually working a full-time job,” he said. “I was on the road a lot, and the program just made it really easy to have the convenience of online classes.”

The completer programs are available to students at community colleges across the state.
