Through the UACCM Community Education Center, adult education classes are offered in Morrilton and Perryville to assist people who are looking to obtain a GED or who want to enhance their employability skills. The mission of Arkansas Adult Education is to provide adult learners with the mechanisms to improve and refine their basic academic skills, obtain the Arkansas high school diploma by passing the GED test, and gain life skills that prepare students for self-sufficiency and improvement in the quality of life. The University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton presents “Magic by Scott Davis” Tuesday, Oct. 15, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fine Arts Auditorium on the UACCM campus. The event is free and is open to all ages. Scott Davis has performed magic professionally since the age of 14. Currently he performs more than 300 live shows per year and is one of the busiest performers in magic today. The E. Allen Gordon Library of the University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton will host Vivienne Schiffer for a special appearance Oct. 11 at noon. Her book, “Camp Nine,” is the 2013 selection for “If All Arkansas Read the Same Book,” a program led by the Arkansas State Library and funded by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services. Schiffer is a novelist and a screenwriter who grew up in Desha County, Arkansas. Her book, “Camp Nine,” depicts events that took place at the Rohwer Relocation Center, one of the two sites in Arkansas where 16,000 Japanese Americans were imprisoned from 1942 to 1945. The fictionalized story is based on the account of an Arkansas Delta girl and her experiences with two internees and an American soldier from the nearby relocation center following the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the outbreak of war with Japan. The University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton Phi Beta Lambda student organization announces plans for the seventh annual UACCM Pageant. The pageant will be Nov. 9 at the Fine Arts Auditorium of the UACCM campus. The pageant is open to current UACCM students and girls between the ages of birth and 17 years competing in seven other categories. Those competing for the title of Miss UACCM will be judged on beauty, professionalism, speech presentation, and interview skills. The winner of the Miss UACCM division will receive a $1,000 scholarship to UACCM, and the first alternate in that category will receive a $500 scholarship. The pageant will run throughout the day, beginning with a welcome at 10:00 a.m. followed by the Baby Miss, Tiny Miss, Petite Miss, and Little Miss competitions. The Theatre Department at the University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton announces its fall production titled “Kindertransport.” The cast will hold five performances of the play from Oct. 10-13. After the violence of Kristallnacht (known as the Night of Broken Glass) against Jews across Germany and Austria, the British government authorized the massive transport of Jewish children (kinder) to Britain via ship and train to rescue them from the injustice and atrocities inflicted by Hitler and the Nazis. Between 1938 and 1939, over the course of nine months, 10,000 Jewish kinder were brought to safety—separating them from their parents and sparing them the horrors of the death camps where many of their family members were exterminated. The play, written by Diane Samuels, examines the life of one child over a 40-year period, and is based on interviews with many kinder. The University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton announces plans for “Starlight Cinema,” a free outdoor community movie night. The event will feature “Jurassic Park” Tuesday, September 17, beginning at dusk on the lawn near the Plaza courtyard on the UACCM campus. Attendees should bring blankets or lawn chairs. Morrilton Boy Scout Troop 93 will manage a concession stand at the event as a fundraiser to help offset costs for the Quapaw Area Council Fall Camporee. The concession stand will open by 7:30 p.m. and will have Coke products, bottled water, popcorn, and candy for sale. In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved indoors. “Jurassic Park” is a 1993 Universal Studios film directed by Steven Spielberg. The fall semester has begun, and on board the exciting year ahead, the University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton has some new employees who have joined us on the journey. In the Nursing Department, Amanda Beaver adds to the team her 20 years of experience as a Registered Nurse. She has worked in various intensive care units, post-anesthesia care units, and perioperative settings. Also, for five years, she managed a hospital-based hyperbaric/wound care clinic. Amanda holds an Associate of Science in Nursing from Lousiana Tech University and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Texas Women's University. Additionally,she is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Nursing Education. Originally from Oklahoma, Amanda now resides in Greenbrier where she enjoys the outdoors.
