The University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton (UACCM) and the University of Central Arkansas (UCA) have partnered to make junior level classes towards a Bachelor of Science in Education with a major in early childhood education available at UACCM. Students receiving an Associate of Arts in Teaching from UACCM who are accepted in to the Bachelor of Science in Education program at UCA will attend classes, taught by UCA instructors, on the UACCM campus. These students will be able to complete their junior level requirements at UACCM and then spend one semester of their senior year attending classes at UCA and one semester completing their student teaching at an area primary school. This program will hopefully ease the transition into a bachelor program by allowing students to complete these higher level courses on a small campus. On September 9, the University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton Foundation hosted the fifth annual “Aiming for Education” shooting competition fundraiser at Point Remove Lodge in Hattieville. Nine three-person teams and eighteen youth participants competed against each other in a variety of shooting games including clay pigeon shooting and team flurry exercises. The University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton (UACCM) will be displaying a Teacher’s Discovery Traveling Exhibit featuring the incredible Mexican paintings of Frida Kahlo during the week of September 24-28. The exhibit was made possible by a donation to the UACCM Art Department from Dr. Eloise Sherman. UACCM Art Instructor Tina Lake said, “Dr. Sherman loves the arts and has been a great supporter of our program over the years.” Lake, Sarah Lawson’s Spanish language classes, and UACCM Coordinator of Multicultural Affairs Mary Newsome partnered to bring the exhibit to campus for Hispanic Heritage Month. The exhibit will be displayed in the main lobby of the E. Allen Gordon Library and is open for the public to view Monday- Thursday 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The Arkansas Fayetteville Shale Transporter Association (AFTA) recently established a $3,000 scholarship for students in the petroleum technology program at the University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton The scholarship was established through a gift to the UACCM Foundation in memory of Charlie Reiter who was employed at Southwestern Energy (SWN) as a Desoto Field Completion Manager for the past seven years until his death in January 2012. The University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton will host a free six-hour Green Advantage Certification training class on Friday, August 24, from 9 am to 4 pm in the UACCM Business Technology Center (BTC) Room 206. Typically, the cost of this training is $175 per person; however, with funding received from the Arkansas Energy Sector Partnership Grant, this training will be free of charge. Emphasis is given to construction field practices as they relate to the role construction personnel have in improving the environmental and health attributes of the built environment. To date, UACCM has provided training for over 100 Nabholz employees in these green initiatives and would like to do the same for other businesses. Singer/songwriter, Adam Day, will perform at the University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton. His music has been aired on several college television shows, including variety / talk-show genres at Ithaca College and Cornell University. The show is on August 21, 2012 at 11am in the Kirk Building, Room 105. Adam has shared the stage with artists, such as the Pat McGee Band, Matt Nathanson, and Jared Campbell. In 2005, Adam released his most recent album, “I Stayed Up Late to Make This.” It includes a dynamic collection of new material recorded independently. In 2010, Adam wanted to give back to the community and participated in “Rock To Rebuild,” a benefit concert for Haiti in Baltimore, MD. The UACCM Adult Education Program is pleased to announce that 32 area residents earned a GED® during the 2011-2012 spring semester.  In honor of these graduates, a summer GED® Graduation Ceremony was held in the UACCM Fine Arts Auditorium on the evening of Tuesday, June 26. Following the ceremony, GED® graduates celebrated their accomplishments surrounded by family members and friends in the UACCM Plaza.  A total of 68 individuals have earned a GED® diploma during 2011-2012 program year. Arkansas is one of only a few states that currently offers the General Education Development (GED®) test at no cost to the student, but unfortunately that will soon change. Nationally, the GED® test is being updated and redesigned to reflect today’s common core educational standards. Beginning in 2014, the GED® test will be computer based with a projected fee of $120.
