UACCM Phi Theta Kappa Earns Regional Recognition

The University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton (UACCM) chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society (PTK) was recognized at the 2023 Oklahoma/Arkansas Regional Convention in Broken Arrow, OK.

UACCM PTK placed first in the Award of Distinction for Honors in Action Theme category for “Play it Forward.” Awards for Honors in Action are determined through an anonymous judging panel that utilizes a rubric for each of the different categories.

The goal of the “Play it Forward” theme is to understand the relationship between play and innovation. UACCM PTK focused on the relationship between breaks taken during study sessions and the enhancement of learning.

UACCM PTK was also recognized in the top five of Honors in Action Research Projects, was named as a top five chapter in the region, given a 5-star rating following the international PTK plan, and UACCM PTK Advisor, Mathew Herrman, was recognized with the Continued Excellence in Advising Certificate of Merit.

Herrman states, “It’s exciting to see how our chapter has been able to navigate the difficulties of the pandemic to remain true to our goals of being fully invested as a chapter with the overall organization. Navigating these projects is central to that, as is our regional and national participation in events.”

The regional convention also marked the unofficial end of UACCM student and PTK member Cody Porter’s tenure as the Arkansas State President of the Oklahoma/Arkansas Region. While he will continue to work through the national PTK Catalyst 2023 in Columbus, Ohio next month, his responsibilities are coming to an end. Porter and his Oklahoma counterpart were the first to lead the region in in-person events since the pandemic in 2020.

The Oklahoma/Arkansas chapter of PTK consists of 41 chapters between the two states. PTK has a presence on almost 1,300 community college campuses in 11 nations. More than 3.8 million students have been inducted into PTK since being established in 1918, with approximately 250,000 active members in the nation’s community colleges.
