Scholarship Opportunity Available to Early Childhood Development Students
UACCM is one of five community college with early childhood development programs that are participating in this initiative. |
The T.E.A.C.H.
Early Childhood Arkansas Initiative is offering a new scholarship opportunity
for UACCM students in the Early Childhood Development (ECD) program. Along with
travel stipends and a bonus upon completion, the scholarship pays 90 percent of
the tuition, fees, and textbook costs for those pursuing an Associate of Applied
Science degree.
The scholarship
is part of a nationwide effort to improve the quality of educators working with
young children, while making college more affordable and increasing income
potential. The scholarship’s goal is to fill the high-demand field in
Arkansas’s early education centers. To qualify for
the scholarship, students must work at least 30 hours per week at an eligible, licensed
family child care center, which fits well with the requirements of UACCM’s
program. The ECD program is designed for students to gain field experience at
the day-care facility on campus—the Earle Love Child Study Center—or other sites.
Once awarded the scholarship, students must complete 9-15 semester hours
towards a degree.
Additionally,
the scholarship provides flexibility. A travel stipend of $80 is provided per
semester, and recipients will also receive a $450 bonus upon completing the scholarship.
Recipients may receive other scholarships or Pell Grants to cover the remaining
portion of their tuition, book costs, and other living expenses.
UACCM is one of
only three community colleges accredited by the Childhood Higher Education Program.
ECD’s mission is to improve the lives of children. It provides a comprehensive
degree plan, combining classroom study and field experience with children from
birth to eight years of age. Graduates leave the program with the awarding
employment at child care centers, Head Start, infant/toddler teaching
positions, and more.
