UACCM Presents 'Steel Magnolias' April 12-15

The University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton Theatre will present Robert Harling’s timeless comedy-drama “Steel Magnolias” this month beginning Thursday, April 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Auditorium on campus. Other performances are scheduled for April 13 and 14 at 7:30 p.m., as well as a matinee show on Sunday, April 15 at 2 p.m.

The cast includes Stephanie Price as Truvy, Deeanna Jones as Annelle, D.J. Reece as Clairee, Mackenzie Hendrix as Shelby, Loretta Carr as M’Lynn, and Toni Taylor as Oiuser. Jim Harris, UACCM’s Theatre & Speech instructor, will be director.

“The title of the play is a reflection of how ‘women are as delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel,’” Harris said. “It’s a very funny play, yet also has a ton of heart to it. The four students, one staff member, and one faculty member I’ve worked with on this project have all been terrific. We’ve rehearsed four nights a week for the last six weeks for three hours at a time. I really appreciate the time and commitment everyone has put into this.”

The 1987 play follows a group of Southern women over the course of three years as they visit and gossip inside Truvy’s beauty salon in small-town Chinquapin, Louisiana. Though full of wit and lighthearted conversations among friends, the play also explores the serious nature of marriage and motherhood.

Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling (501) 977-2045, visiting the Student Accounts window in the University Center lobby, or at the door before each performance. Tickets are $10 for adults, and $5 for all UACCM students and employees. Children 12 years of age or younger will be admitted free of charge.
