UACCM Phi Theta Kappa Chapter Receives Three-Star Designation
Last week, the University of Arkansas Community
College at Morrilton’s Beta Eta Sigma chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, an
international honor society of community and junior colleges, was designated a
three-star chapter by the organization’s international office.
“Our officers
have played a key role in attaining this rating,” Mat Herrman, a Phi Theta
Kappa advisor at UACCM, said. “In the chapter’s history, we have not made it
past the first star, which meets the base requirements for chapters to be
considered active. Our officers established the goal of becoming a two-star
chapter at our summer planning meeting, but were dedicated to working toward
meeting at least part of the three-star standard.”
Herrman said
that in order to keep the chapter’s new three-star ranking, members must maintain
their activities each year, including all one- and two-star requirements.
“Our chapter now
has its eyes set on a four-star ranking, which will be obtained by becoming
more involved in the Oklahoma and Arkansas regions,” he said. The highest
ranking a chapter can receive is a five-star designation.
The mission
statement of Phi Theta Kappa is “to recognize academic achievement of college
students and to provide opportunities for them to grow as scholars and
leaders.” To become a member, students must have completed at least 12 hours of
coursework that may be applied to an associate degree while maintaining at
least a 3.5 GPA.
